2.8 million people were enrolled at German universities at the beginning of the 2018/2019 winter semester – a new record . The number of new enrollments is falling slightly, but remains consistently high. For five years, over 500,000 new students have enrolled at a university or technical college every semester. Training in the dual system, which enjoys an excellent reputation worldwide, is increasingly being forgotten. Why actually?
Between training and studying: pros and cons.
Pro training – against studying
A salary is paid during the training. Aircraft mechanics, social insurance clerks and air traffic controllers receive around 1,000 euros in the first year. With your own salary, young people's independence and self-confidence increase. During their training they are supervised and supported by an instructor, while life at university can be quite anonymous.
After training, all options are open to new graduates given the excellent job market situation. Anyone who then decides to study will benefit enormously from the practical experience and will be a big step ahead of their fellow students.
After training, the end of the career ladder is not reached . Career advancement is possible with further training. A master or technician may earn more money after completing further training than university graduates with a master's degree or even a doctorate. At least one in three managers in Germany has never seen the inside of a university - and yet still managed to become the head of a successful company.
Pro study – con training
At university, students enjoy more freedom. He doesn't have to stick to fixed working hours, can act more independently and even miss a lecture. Students have more freedom when it comes to homework or high-level academic work . Anyone interested in studying can explore various subjects after graduating and then decide. During the training, the determination takes place when the contract is signed.
At the university, primarily theoretical content is taught. They represent the basis for the practical elements that await later in your professional life. Equipped with a completed degree, the career opportunities are higher than those without a degree. This is also reflected in your future salary. In some sectors, academic salaries are up to 50 percent higher than those of vocational training graduates.
In dual training, at least four weeks of vacation are required; at university, everyone benefits from semester breaks that last for months. There's a lot of time for traveling, visiting friends or gaming on the gaming laptop .
