Welcome money for students: Up to 200 euros in various German cities

Did you know that in various German cities you will receive a welcome bonus of up to 200 euros if you move your main residence there when you start your studies? The conditions are very different. In some cities the money is transferred directly, other cities only offer voucher books as a reward.

Berlin (100€, 50€ from October 1st, 2012)

Students who registered their main residence in Berlin after March 19, 2002 and previously had a main residence in another federal state or abroad will receive a welcome allowance of 100 euros . To do this, you must be enrolled at a state, a state-recognized university or the vocational academy in Berlin. From October 1, 2012, the welcome fee will be reduced to 50 euros. Braunschweig (200€)

The city of Braunschweig pays a one-off immigration bonus of 200 euros for students from the Technical University, the HBK and the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences who register as their main residence in Braunschweig for the first time. The regulation applies immediately. This amount is paid out after June 30th of each year.

In Bremen you can get 150 euros in welcome money if you register your main residence in the city.

Chemnitz (100€)

In Chemnitz there is a welcome fee of 100 euros. You would have to apply for it within two weeks of registering.

Dresden (150€)

The state capital Dresden pays all students who register their main residence in Dresden a welcome fee of 150 euros. Payment can be received once.

Flensburg (vouchers)

In Flensburg, students receive a so-called welcome package when they register their main residence there. The welcome package consists of a voucher booklet with regularly over 25 vouchers and contains many attractive offers, for example in the areas of culture and sport. You can submit the application at the citizens' office in the Flensburg town hall (Rathausplatz 1, 24937 Flensburg).

Halle (one-time bonus + €75/year)

Halle pays a one-time welcome bonus if you register your apartment in Halle as your main residence. Upon application to the Halle City Citizens Service, you will receive a one-off semester fee and, upon presentation, your semester ticket will be refunded. The residents' registration office in Merseburg also grants an annual student bonus of 75 euros for every year you spend in the city as a student. The registration forms are created individually by the employees of the residents' registration office on site. Bring your identity card, student ID or certificate of enrollment and your rental agreement with you.

Jena (120€)

The city of Jena pays every enrolled student in Jena who registers their main residence in Jena for the first time and who has not yet reached the age of 30 a welcome fee of 60 euros per semester. This will be paid out for a maximum of 2 semesters.

Kiel (100€)

In Kiel you will receive 100 euros in welcome money if you register in Kiel for the first time with your own apartment/main residence and keep the apartment for at least one year. The welcome fee applies to students at the Christian Albrechts University, the Kiel University of Applied Sciences, the Kiel Business Academy (WAK) and the Muthesius Art University.

Lausitz (vouchers worth €100)

Students at Lausitz University of Applied Sciences who move their main residence to Senftenberg receive welcome money in the form of vouchers worth 100 euros .
Registration takes place in person at the residents’ registration office at Rathausstrasse 8.

Leipzig (150€)

Students at Leipzig University of Applied Sciences receive a welcome allowance of 150 euros if they move their main residence to Leipzig for the purpose of studying. This must be a first degree and the first registration with your main residence in Leizig. Registration with your main residence must take place in the year in which you begin your studies.

Registration takes place via the citizens' offices .

Magdeburg (160€)

If you move to Magdeburg, it is worth registering your main residence here. The city advertises with the slogan: “Study in Magdeburg and collect money”. Students receive €160 from the city of Magdeburg.

The city of Oldenburg awards a welcome fee of 50 euros to students who register fully here and are enrolled at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, the Oldenburg University of Applied Sciences, East Frisia, Wilhelmshaven - Oldenburg location, or a comparable institution.

Osnabrück (100€)

Students in Osnabrück who register their primary residence here will receive a voucher for 100 euros . After one year you can exchange the voucher for cash, provided you still have your primary residence in Osnabrück. You can apply for the voucher at the Citizens' Office of the city of Osnabrück (Stadthaus 1, Natruper-Tor-Wall 2, 49076).

Pforzheim (120€)

Students at Pforzheim University who have registered their main residence in Pforzheim since September 1, 2011 will receive a one-off welcome allowance of 120 euros .
