The story
Only a year has passed since Allan Karlsson's (Robert Gustafsson) last adventure. He and his friends are now enjoying life on Bali's beautiful beaches. However, over the last year they have lived as if there was no tomorrow, and so not much was left of the unexpected windfall. Allan, who always expects he could step down any day, is celebrating his 101st birthday. As he opens the very last bottle of folk soda, dating back to his days as an occasional Cold War spy, the toast brings back old memories of Brezhnev's lesser-known attempts to break U.S. supremacy in rock and soft drinks through tough competition. Even though balalaika rock didn't conquer the world, Nixon did everything he could to turn off the production of the delicious folk soda.
While Benny and his pregnant girlfriend Miriam decide to return to their beloved Malmköping to raise their child, Allan, Julius, former gang member Pike and the treacherous Capuchin monkey named Erlander have other plans. They quickly leave the luxury hotel in bathrobes, cheat the bill and set off on a global search for the long-lost recipe for folk soda, perhaps the best lemonade in the world.
While Miriam's cravings for Allan's delicious fizzy drink lead Benny to search through Allan's belongings stored in the basement in the retirement home for more leftovers, Julius has a business idea that could fill her empty pockets in no time. In the meantime, a YouTube clip of Julius screaming at the monkey Erlander is causing a sensation online. The daughter of a certain Russian spy also sees the clip. She still has unfinished business with Allan because she blames her father's former colleague and friend for his death and believes he stole the soda recipe that she believed was hers.
Allan, Julius, a capuchin monkey and an amnesiac bully are anything but an unremarkable quartet. Word of her return to the world quickly spreads. And so it doesn't take long until the son of a British gangster, the CIA, an obscure Swedish psychiatrist and a well-known police inspector from Sweden are on their heels.
