Which Netflix series made Taylor Schilling famous?

The story

In her long-awaited foray into the horror-thriller genre, Orange is the New Black's Taylor Schilling plays a mother named Sarah. The disturbing behavior of her young son Miles suggests that an evil, possibly supernatural force has taken possession of him. Sarah must choose between her maternal instinct to love and protect Miles and her desperate need to find out what - or who - is responsible. She is forced to look for answers in the past and takes the audience on a wild ride where the line between perception and reality becomes frighteningly unclear.

A Mother's Love - the mother roles in horror films

Mothers were already a dominant element when horror films were still in their infancy. On February 7th, THE PRODIGY, the latest version of this classic combination, will be released in cinemas, giving the basic idea a new perspective. In the following chronology you have the opportunity to see how the mother role has been established in horror films.

1. Norma Louise Bates in Psycho (1960)

Let's start with a classic! What would a list of mother figures in horror films be without Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho”? Here, for the first time, the relationship between a son and his mother became the focus of the plot. What's particularly outstanding is that Norma Louise Bates isn't actually shown directly in the film. Hitchcock played primarily with what he showed and what the viewer thought he saw. Nevertheless, the mother can be described as one of the main characters, as Norman Bates defines himself through the relationship he maintains with his mother and to which he clings so much.

2. Margaret White in “Carrie: Satan’s Youngest Daughter” (1976)

Carrie White's relationship with her mother is one of condemnation and humiliation. You don't feel much of the motherly love that would actually be expected. Since her husband's death, Margaret White has been a religious fanatic and sees everything her daughter Carry does as sin and fornication. Here you can particularly clearly observe how a daughter, who tries to break away from her mother's oppression, still stands by her in the end and seeks her affection and closeness.

3. Grace Stewart in “The Others” (2001)

As a single, loving mother of two children, Grace Stewart stands out from the classic image of mothers in horror films. At first it seems that the problems arise solely from the remote property in which the three live with their servants.
The film is particularly exciting because of its look and the change in perspective on the mother. After watching how lovingly the mother protects her children, the truth is even more shocking...

4. Annabel in “Mama” (2013)

At first you might think that the title would be misleading, because the special thing about the mother's role in "Mama" is that it is not the biological mother who tries to protect the children. Annabel, the aunt by marriage of the girls Victoria and Lilly, takes on a motherly role in Victoria's life, although she initially says that she is not yet ready for the role of mother. It soon becomes clear that the creature that threatens the children's well-being is not just called mom, but was herself a mother and therefore took the children for herself. In the film “Mama” the mother’s role is examined on different levels.

5. Annie Graham in “Hereditary” (2018)

“Hereditary” not only focuses on the relationship between mother Annie Graham and her children, but also Annie's relationship with her own mother. Even though Annie wanted nothing to do with her in life, old pictures and things she finds after her death spark curiosity in her. But the more she learns about her mother, the deeper the depths become that would never have been discovered. She soon realizes that her mother may not be completely gone after all.

6. Sarah Blume in THE PRODIGY (2019)

Sarah Blume has wanted a child for a long time. When she finally gives birth to Miles, something doesn't seem quite right. Initially exhibiting behavioral problems, he was admitted to an institution for the gifted. However, the boy soon becomes a disruptive factor there.
This mother-child relationship is characterized by the mother's unconditional love for her child. At first she doesn't want to admit that something is wrong. When she realizes that it can no longer be denied, she fights to protect her child. No matter how and by what means.

Finally, let yourself be truly spooked again when THE PRODIGY opens in German cinemas on February 7th.
