If you're feeling wanderlust: travel around the world
Who doesn't dream of simply packing their bags and discovering the wide world? From a young age, I too had the wish to have traveled to every country in the world at some point - unfortunately I can't tick off all the destinations yet, but I was able to discover some of my favorites as part of my trip around the world. Here I'll tell you how to plan your trip around the world and choose your destinations wisely.
Wanderlust: turning dreams into reality
For example, at some point I started a list of places I really wanted to travel to. Included were, among other things, Christmas in New York City á la “Kevin alone in New York”, the colorful, crazy Tokyo, Hong Kong and Rio de Janeiro. With the exception of the latter, I have fulfilled these wishes in recent years. The planning followed this pattern:
- What destinations have I always wanted to see?
- Can all of these be combined with each other?
- What is the weather like?
- What is the current political situation?
Unfortunately, Rio de Janeiro initially fell off the grid because it was simply too expensive at the time I was planning to travel - it would have been a crazy detour and somehow wouldn't have fit in quite well. Then there is also the question of when: For me it was perfect to take a kind of gap year between my bachelor's and consecutive master's studies - half a year of which was a trip around the world and another half a year of internship, which was the ideal combination for me. But even after graduating from high school or as part of a vacation semester, a trip around the world can be the perfect option to satisfy your wanderlust.
This is how you pack for your trip around the world
Oh dear, and still only 23 kilos of luggage? No problem – smart packing is the order of the day. Above all, think about what activities you want to do and what you need for them. Important tips on packing – this should definitely not be missing:
- Sturdy shoes – the be-all and end-all for successful discovery tours
- Long, thin, light-colored pants for tropical areas
- Rain jacket plus fleece jacket for bad weather
- Enough underwear plus liquid detergent for hand washing
- Mosquito repellent spray
- swimwear
- A small towel
- Pillowcase (works wonders - it makes every hostel a little more homey!)
- Disinfectant spray
- Possibly camera accessories
- Travel adapter depending on the destination country (possibly multi-plug)
- Credit card
Get informed – important! – find out in advance which vaccinations are required for you in the respective areas. Some vaccines, such as rabies or Japanese encephalitis, must be ordered in advance and administered multiple times at prescribed intervals. So if, like me, you don't want to spend the last day before departure with a hectic run to the pharmacy, take care of your vaccinations in good time.

Collecting memories for a lifetime: the trip around the world itself
Once you've said goodbye to your loved ones and taken the last bite of brown bread (believe me, no matter where you end up - you can really only get proper brown bread at home!), you can get started. By the way, we recommend a long music list for the flight with songs from a wide variety of genres, a few films for long-haul flights and a few small snacks in case the food on the plane is - again - inedible.
When you arrive at your destination, you will quickly notice that you are no longer homesick and are ready to absorb everything new: new cultures, different lifestyles, delicious food from all over the world, making intercultural friendships, experiencing incredible cities and breathtaking nature up close , all of this awaits you on your self-made adventure. No one can take away the memories you make - and this journey will change something in you, no matter where you go. You will grow on every trip, leave a little bit of your heart in every new city, feel a little at home everywhere - experiences that everyone should have at least once. Bet you get addicted to new adventures?
