Everything at the beginning

You have your future in your hands. If you need free travel to pursue a new path, you may need to drop out of your studies. Check beforehand whether the path deserves the sacrifice, whether you actually just want to escape and what other opportunities await you.

If you want to finish your studies - then make sure you do it for the right reasons:

– You have an economically viable alternative, such as a job offer or an inheritance.

– You have discovered that the course you have chosen does not suit you or your life plans at all.

– You feel at a dead end and regret not taking a different path.

If the chosen subject does not meet your expectations, talk to fellow students in higher semesters, the student advisor or a lecturer. In every subject there are phases that literally make you want to drop out. Find out whether better phases await you - then grit your teeth and work towards quickly getting into the more pleasant realms of study. If your expectations of your studies are disappointed, changing your subject or university are options worth considering.

When making your decisions, consider the reasons why you started studying in the first place. Have these changed, have you changed, have your living circumstances changed? So much so that you have to take a completely different path? In many cases it makes strategic sense to request a semester or two of leave. You gain some distance and can try out alternatives.

A very pragmatic aspect is your economic circumstances. Do you have enough income to pay for health insurance, rent, and refrigerator contents? Check what status you will be in if you deregister. If you are not self-employed or employed, contact the job center. So you better take precautions and make sure you have an employment contract, a project assignment as a self-employed person, vocational training or at least a concrete plan before you deregister.

You may also be stuck with your bank balance and can barely afford your studies. Then use your semester break and vacation semester effectively to earn money. No job is beneath you that helps make your dream of good education come true. Sometimes a part-time job turns into something more and you are tempted to abandon your studies in order to save your bank balance. How much work and how many seminars are still between you and your degree? Is canceling the current financial relief also convincing in the medium and long term?

At some point in your life you will be confronted with questions about dropping out of college. Such a biographical break is acceptable if it fits the thread of your life and doesn't just happen on a whim. With all your understanding of “a break,” it is more effective to approach a breakup not as the end of something terrible, but as the beginning of something good. It could initiate the phase in which you travel the world to experience foreign cultures and languages. It can be the moment when you start a project or consciously take a different direction in your training. Make sure today that you never feel remorse over the lack of a degree.
