Money surfing

A part-time job, quickly and comfortably from home. Big words that the internet promises you. Time to test it yourself: One week, four jobs. And I have actually become richer - especially because of the realization that you can really earn something within a short period of time only with skill.

It is convenient, simple, fast and reliable. The promise of making money online is tailor-made for me. I am a student and journalism student. There's not much time left. But if I work from home and organize my own time, a part-time job is possible. It's Monday, my work week can begin. Immediately. Practical, this Internet.

I browse through the offers. You can apparently do anything on the Internet for money: play poker, sell discarded clothes, write advertising, translate texts, market blogs, test computer games, read advertising emails, name companies, “like” on Facebook or undress in front of the webcam. For the next four days I give myself one task.

Old makes money

Looking for things to sell online, I search my closet, shelves and basement. There would certainly have been more to get from Mom in the attic than in a student apartment. But at least: A pile of books, CDs, a microphone, bicycle parts and a shirt are now piled up on my couch.

I'm listing two bicycle tires and a microphone on Ebay. That costs me fees – 45 cents each. That's why I'm offering a brand new bicycle gear system from my competitor hood.de - without any fees, but also to fewer potential buyers.

Kleiderkreisel.de is in the hands of women. Not even five percent of the clothes sold and given away there are for men. That only changes when guys like me offer something. I'm listing the shirt for 12 euros. All for free, with lots of photos and the option to browse the Kreiderkreisel blog for hours.

But I want quick money. I go to medienkosmos.de, a site that buys CDs and DVDs. I type in the IBAN number of my five favorite CDs. I'm really into the jazz classics but I don't even have a CD drive anymore. I get 2.96 euros for them. I could cry. And keep them.

On the comparison portal werzahltmehr.de I enter the key data of well-preserved books from my high school years, thick university tomes, dictionaries and novels. I can get rid of “The Political System of the European Union” (original 24.90 euros) for 5 euros. I'm barely offered anything for the rest - just 10 cents for my Spanish dictionary, for example. Amazon Trade-In doesn't help me much either. They give students 20 percent more per book they buy. Grandma would have to die for it to actually be worth clearing out stacks of bookshelves.

Earn per click

Today I'm going to make money by clicking on things with the mouse. I crash on the couch to answer a few surveys. After around 28 surveys, toluna.com would pay me out – not with money, but with vouchers. For example, for two visits to the cinema. Where have I traveled? Where do I shop? How much money do I earn? After 35 minutes I exhausted the current surveys, but was thrown out every time after a few questions: quota full, not the target group, they say. Nothing comes of the cinema voucher. All that remains is the hope of a draw for a smartphone that I registered for.

“Paid social media campaigns,” advertises socialworld.de. This is also aimed at companies that order followers and Facebook fans. I'm supposed to deliver it. For just over a cent per click. For example, for a comment on YouTube videos, retweets on Twitter, likes on Amazon, followers on Google Plus, subscribers on Soundcloud, Facebook friends and “likes” on the company page. I open the section to click on my first cent - unfortunately without being able to see what I like. When I find out on my Facebook timeline that I have just declared myself a fan of “Dermabiomedical”, which specializes in “painless hair removal”, I take a look at the terms and conditions: undo likes and there are no fake accounts allowed. Before I earn the five euros of the first payout with hundreds of strange social media activities and ruin my reputation online, I'd rather call it a day.

Market yourself

When I started my blog a few months ago, I didn't want to get rich. I wanted an independent platform to experiment. But why not earn money from it? Lousypennies.de explains to me how you can make money online with journalism. For example with Flattr. After 20 minutes of fiddling with the blog settings, another button next to the Facebook button invites you to click. If a Flattr user likes one of my texts, part of the money they pay to Flattr every month is diverted to me.

Get rich just through donations? Unlikely. I would like to place advertising on my blog. My blog provider supports WordAds. However, I am first asked to wait: the application can take up to a month. I won't earn much from it anyway. On karrierebibel.de, Jochen Mai explains that advertising is only really worthwhile if you have a thousand readers a day. So far I have a thousand a month.

You can also play advertising on my YouTube videos, which I link to in the blog. You just have to “monetize” the channel. This can be done with just a few clicks. Here, too, I am initially put off waiting for a week - but then I receive a confirmation on the same day. Since then, ten seconds of advertising have been played before every video. YouTube cannot give a general answer as to how much money can be made with it. However, some people are already earning their living with this in Germany (see box).

Coal for skill

Most people earn their money offline with what they are particularly good at. Why not online too? There is money for designing at 12designer.com, for translating at drwiki.com and for writing at textbroker.de. The latter should be something for me.

Mail order companies and information platforms post what they want in text form: product descriptions, press releases and news. Authors collect their orders and pay for cash. Before I become one of you, I have to apply with a sample text about my favorite club. After just five hours I was admitted, unfortunately as a beginner with only two out of five stars. The better the rating, the more money you get per text. It's only two euros for my first one. I spent around 45 minutes working on the four paragraphs of the product description of the “Ei 650 smoke detector”, which is available to buy in a pack of six. There are a handful of other smoke detectors waiting to be described - as well as cars, hard drives, brakes, handicraft fashion, a football game and partner portals for people over 50. With a little patience and routine, I might get the pace and better classification that would earn me an acceptable hourly wage. And so the same rule applies on the Internet as it does elsewhere: only those who can do something can earn money from it.

8 signs of dubious home work

1. You should pay in advance for something
2. You only find job promises - no job description.
3. The provider advertises with test seals that are only available on his site.
4. The provider can only be reached by phone and mobile.
5. The imprint does not name any contact person.
6. A complete company name and address is missing.
7. The provider is already known to the consumer advice center.
8. Employees appear to praise them, but they cannot be verified. Just fakes.
