Country rethought – competition for innovative projects

The cities are full, the country is empty. Every year, more and more young people in particular move from the countryside to the city and there is a yawning emptiness in the villages and communities. What will become of the country now? This is exactly the question that the initiative “Germany – Land of Ideas” asked itself and therefore set this year’s competition under the motto “Innovations across the country – rethinking rural areas”. The application deadline is April 30, 2014.

The topics of demographic change and its consequences have become part of the curriculum not only in the demography course. Doctors are thinking about what medical care in rural areas might look like in the future; Tourism students develop marketing concepts for the Uckermark and the Hunsrück; Teaching students ask themselves how children in rural areas will go to school in 10, 20, 30 years and architecture and spatial planning students are looking for new living concepts for cities and rural areas. And it is precisely this creativity and ability to think outside of existing structures that the initiative is looking for “Germany – Land of Ideas” in their competition. Because the question of what the future of rural areas can look like can only be answered with courage, passion and idealism.

Projects from the areas of business, culture, science, the environment, education and society can apply to Excellent Places with their ideas on the topic of “Cross-country innovations – rethinking rural areas” until April 30th. It doesn't matter whether you are a research or cultural institution, university, club, etc. or a private person. The main thing is that your idea makes a sustainable contribution to the future of rural areas and regions.

In June, 100 lighthouse projects will be awarded the title of “Excellent Place 2014”. The winning projects will also be reported on and published in a publication.

The “Germany – Land of Ideas” initiative is a cooperation between the federal government and German industry. Deutsche Bank has been a partner and national sponsor of the competition since 2006. Since its founding in 2005, the initiative has honored more than 2,600 projects. Further information about the initiative and the competition can be found at Land der Ideas ; Innovations across the country and at Excellent Places .

We wish you good luck with your application!
