The exams have been passed, the certificate is within reach - if it weren't for the annoying final paper. Regardless of whether it is a bachelor's thesis, a master's thesis or a dissertation, academic writing always represents an enormous challenge. If you have already completed your work, you can calmly congratulate yourself; the mammoth portion is done.
But don't rush into anything now, even if you finally want to hand in the work! It is very important that you proofread every word you write, because there is nothing more annoying than receiving deductions because of careless errors. I'll tell you about my experiences with thesis and recommend that you complete the following four steps to your perfect bachelor's, master's or doctoral thesis .
1. Pause first
Finally the annoying work is finished! Now just quickly skim through again, then off to the copy center, have it bound and hand it in - right? Unfortunately, this is completely wrong, as errors can quickly creep in with such actions. I recommend that you let the work rest for now, ideally for several days. Then you carefully examine the content, check your arguments, pay attention to spelling and grammar. The longer break allowed you to gain some distance and see your work a little more through the eyes of someone who hasn't read it yet.
2. Read backwards
With a final thesis such as a bachelor's thesis, and even more so with more complex texts such as a master's thesis or dissertation, the author quickly knows every sentence by heart. This makes it all the more difficult to spot spelling errors. That's why you should not only read the text forwards, but also backwards - not "sträwkcür nesel" but "read backwards". This forces your brain to concentrate hard enough to take in each word one at a time instead of skimming through a few. I know it sounds tiring and annoying, but it works!
3. Have family, friends, colleagues proofread it
After you have properly checked your thesis, it is the turn of your friends, fellow students and family members. This has the advantage that you can check whether laypeople understand your conclusions. At the same time, fellow students will give you valuable tips on the content, after all, they have similar specialist knowledge as you. Since you know best how annoying reading a scientific paper can be, you should thank your helpers - how about, for example with an invitation to dinner at your place?
4. Professional proofreading
Personally, I wasn't content with just having my work proofread by myself and my friends - given the enormous effort and time that my bachelor's and master's degrees cost me, I didn't want to let anything go to waste. That's why I looked for a professional service provider to proofread my theses.
Editing for the bachelor's thesis
I decided to have a bachelor's thesis professionally edited and proofread . It was examined, among other things, with regard to the following aspects:
- spelling, orthography
- grammar
- punctuation
- Hyphenation
- Consistency of spellings
- typography
- Page and footnote numbering
In fact, this uncovered a few more errors that both I and my personal proofreaders had missed.
Editing for the master's thesis
Since I was enthusiastic about the service, I also consulted a professional service to correct my master's thesis . Their offer includes the points already mentioned above and also offers the following:
- Proofreading in German, English, French, Spanish, Italian or Russian
- Scientific feedback from the supervising editor
- Over 220 academic lecturers from all common areas
In the case of my master's thesis, it was definitely worth having it corrected by experts.
Editing for the dissertation
I simply can't give up scientific research, which is why I decided to do a doctorate after completing my master's degree. I am currently nearing the end of my doctorate and would like to have my dissertation edited . Since I have already had very good experiences with professional online proofreading twice, it is almost a must for my doctoral thesis. The services include:
- Proofreading (spelling, grammar, punctuation, sentence structure)
- Style improvement
- Feedback on abnormalities
Finally, I can only advise you to put your work through its paces and not just on your own! Even if motivation decreases rapidly at the end, small mistakes are also important when assigning grades - and that's even more annoying. Good luck writing and hold on, you'll soon have the title in your pocket!
Is your bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral thesis finished? Then let them proofread properly!
