The skater culture doesn't stop at studying in Münster. Many students have already swapped their own bike for a handy skateboard or a trendy longboard. But why is skating so popular in Münster’s scene?
Who is 'Lord of the Board'?
Titus Dittmann from Münster made skateboarding popular in Germany more than 30 years ago - and Münster became a mecca for the skater scene.
In 1978, the aspiring sports and geography teacher invested a civil service loan in a skate park. At the same time, he brought the first skateboards from California to Germany. A short time later, Titus Dittmann and his wife opened Europe's first skate shop in Münster .
And a good 30 years later, skateboarding received scientific honors in Münster when Titus Dittmann received a teaching position at the Institute for Sports Science .
Dittmann also organized charitable projects such as Skate-Aid , which was launched in 2009 and which, among other things, equipped a school in Karukh, Afghanistan, with a skate and sports facility. More information here .
Dittmann was also responsible for organizing the World Skateboarding Championships in Münster and Dortmund .
Studying in Münster and knowing where to go skating
With so much pioneering spirit and passion for skateboarding, it almost goes without saying that there are some good locations for skateboarding in Münster.
In addition to the Skaters Palace skate hall, there are a whole range of free outdoor opportunities to perfect your skills on the board - for example the skate facilities and the skate park in the city of Münster . Also very popular, but not entirely official, is the skate spot in front of the Münster municipal utilities in the harbor. The skaters practice here – and the port visitors watch in amazement.
