Banksy is the most famous street artist of today. An exhibition in Bikini Berlin will show over 60 of his impressive works until mid-June 2018.
In 2010, the US Time magazine named him one of the one hundred most influential people in the world: the street artist Banksy, whose sprayed works are now part of the canon of contemporary art and are highly sought after by collectors. His guerrilla stencil graffiti can be found on house walls all over the world, sometimes poetically, sometimes ironically and provocatively dealing with current political and economic issues. It's about wars, conflicts and escape, about double standards and consumer terror, about love and hope. He turns Molotov cocktails into bouquets of flowers and gives the dove of peace a bulletproof vest with crosshairs. You have to look twice to decipher the messages that are intended to encourage the viewer to think and question.
But who is behind it? Who is behind such famous works as “Girl with Balloon” (2004) or “Flower Thrower” (before 2000), which sell for several hundred thousand euros at auction? To this day, Banksy's identity remains a mystery. The street artist appears incognito, what is known about him is pure speculation: some say he is around 40 and probably comes from Bristol, UK. Others even suspect that Banksy is an artist collective.
One person who knows more, but won't say anything, is Steve Lazarides, curator of the exhibition “The Art of Banksy,” which can be seen at Bikini Berlin until mid-June 2018. They both met in 1997. Lazarides, who accompanied Banksy as an agent for eleven years, is considered one of the pioneers of the street art movement.
The exhibition at Bikini Berlin presents several key works and traces Banksy's rise from unknown sprayer to internationally celebrated street art superstar. With over 60 original drawings, paintings and sculptures, most of which come from private collections, as well as additional interactive offerings, the show invites you to immerse yourself in the most important periods of Banksy's work.
